If you’re in the mood for a gripping yet slightly unnerving hostage drama, with the added allure of R. Madhavan’s captivating performance, “Shaitaan” might just be the ticket for you. The film serves as another canvas for Ajay Devgn‘s cinematic prowess, showcasing his multifaceted talent as both the heroic savior and the doting family man.

Ajay Devgn’s filmography is a testament to his versatility, oscillating between roles that portray him as the indomitable rescuer and the endearing patriarch. From the intense fervor of “Gangaajal” to the rugged charm of the “Singham” franchise and the compelling grit of “Raid,” Ajay Devgn has embodied a distinct archetype of the unwavering hero, driven by principles and a fiery resolve. Conversely, his portrayal of the affable yet imperfect father figure, epitomized in films like “Drishyam” and “Shivaay,” adds depth to his repertoire.

In Vikas Bahl’s “Shaitaan,” Ajay Devgn character, Kabir Rishi, encapsulates both these facets as he grapples with the harrowing ordeal of rescuing his daughter. The narrative hinges on Devgn’s established persona, weaving a tale of parental sacrifice and relentless determination.

However, the true essence of “Shaitaan” lies not in its horror or suspense, but in its manipulation of psychological tropes and supernatural elements. Bahl infuses the familiar tropes of hostage dramas with a dash of the occult, resulting in a concoction that teeters on the edge of absurdity.

The introduction of R. Madhavan’s character, an enigmatic “vashikaran” specialist, adds a sinister layer to the narrative. His methodical manipulation of the protagonist’s family, coupled with his insidious agenda, sets the stage for a chilling showdown.Screenshot 2024 03 08 151043

The premise of a stranger infiltrating a secluded family abode is a well-worn trope in the realm of psychological thrillers. However, Bahl’s execution, while competent, fails to elevate the narrative beyond its genre conventions. The gradual escalation of tension and the interplay of interpersonal dynamics feel somewhat derivative, lacking the innovation needed to leave a lasting impact.

Madhavan’s portrayal of the malevolent interloper is undoubtedly compelling, showcasing his versatility as an actor. Yet, his character’s descent into villainy feels somewhat formulaic, lacking the nuance and depth required to truly unsettle the audience.

Despite its shortcomings, “Shaitaan” offers moments of genuine tension and intrigue, propelled by Devgn’s commanding presence and Bahl’s deft direction. “Shaitaan” is a worthy addition to Ajay Devgn illustrious filmography, albeit one that falls short of its full potential. While it may not reinvent the wheel, it delivers a solid dose of suspense and drama, punctuated by standout performances from its lead actors. So, if you’re craving a cinematic thrill ride with a touch of the supernatural, “Shaitaan” might just be the perfect choice.

As the tension escalates, the film’s reliance on clichés becomes increasingly apparent. The remote farmhouse setting, the unsuspecting family, and the mysterious stranger with sinister intentions have all been explored ad nauseam in countless thrillers before. While R Madhavan injects some intrigue with his portrayal of the enigmatic interloper, his character’s actions and motivations ultimately feel contrived and lacking in depth.

Moreover, the incorporation of supernatural elements into the plot feels forced and unnecessary. The notion of a “vashikaran” specialist manipulating the family through hypnotism and planning sacrificial rituals adds little to the narrative beyond a superficial layer of mystique. Instead of enhancing the suspense, these elements detract from the film’s credibility and undermine the gravity of the situation.

Despite these shortcomings, Shaitaan manages to maintain a certain level of entertainment value thanks in large part to the performances of its lead actors. Ajay Devgn brings his trademark intensity to the role of Kabir Rishi, the desperate father fighting to save his daughter from the clutches of evil. His portrayal of a man torn between his instincts as a protector and his vulnerability as a parent adds depth to an otherwise formulaic character.
