Kamal Haasan Poised for Rajya Sabha Entry with Strong DMK Backing
Kamal Haasan, the legendary Indian actor turned politician, is on the verge of marking a significant milestone in his political career with his expected entry into the Rajya Sabha.
The move comes with the support of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, and underscores the evolving dynamics of regional alliances and strategic political positioning in Indian politics. This development not only signifies a breakthrough for Haasan’s party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), but also represents a calculated effort by the DMK to consolidate and reward its alliance partnerships.
The DMK, under the leadership of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has officially announced its list of candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled to be held on June 19, 2025. Out of the six seats that will fall vacant from Tamil Nadu, the DMK is expected to comfortably secure four, thanks to its dominant strength of 134 members in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
The party has decided to nominate Kamal Haasan as one of its supported candidates, fulfilling a political understanding reached during the 2024 general elections. The remaining two seats are projected to go to the opposition AIADMK, which has recently realigned itself with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
This move by the DMK is being widely interpreted as a reward for Haasan’s decision not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and instead support the DMK-led INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu. In exchange for this support, the DMK had promised a Rajya Sabha seat to the MNM, and this promise is now being honored.
Kamal Haasan, who founded Makkal Needhi Maiam in 2018 with a vision of offering a credible alternative to the dominant Dravidian parties, has thus far struggled to convert his mass appeal into electoral success. Despite fielding candidates in both parliamentary and assembly elections, MNM has failed to win a single seat. However, the party has managed to secure a modest vote share, with about 3.72 percent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and 2.62 percent in the 2021 state assembly elections.
Kamal Haasan nomination to the Rajya Sabha is viewed as a significant opportunity for both him and his party. It gives MNM its first formal representation in Parliament, allowing it a national platform to present its policies and viewpoints. For Kamal Haasan personally, it offers a legislative role where he can engage in policy debates, raise issues concerning Tamil Nadu and the nation, and build political credibility that electoral losses have not permitted so far. Political analysts believe that this could help the actor-politician transition from being a symbolic presence in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape to a functional lawmaker with national visibility.
The DMK, on the other hand, benefits from reinforcing its image as a party that honors its commitments and believes in inclusive politics. By accommodating a relatively smaller ally like MNM in its Rajya Sabha seat distribution, the DMK not only strengthens its alliance but also sends a message of strategic generosity. This gesture may also help the party forge stronger relationships with other regional and ideological allies as part of the larger INDIA bloc in the future.
Alongside Kamal Haasan, the DMK has also nominated senior advocate P. Wilson, former minister S.R. Sivalingam, and renowned writer and poet Salma for the Rajya Sabha. These nominations reflect a balance of experience, legal expertise, political acumen, and cultural representation. The inclusion of Salma, in particular, has been welcomed by many as a progressive choice symbolizing the party’s commitment to promoting voices from diverse backgrounds.
As preparations for the Rajya Sabha elections gather momentum, political circles in Tamil Nadu and beyond are keenly watching Kamal Haasan next steps. The Rajya Sabha provides him a significant opportunity to establish himself as a serious politician and not merely a celebrity dabbling in politics. With the exposure and responsibilities that come with membership in the Upper House, Kamal Haasan will now have to navigate the complexities of parliamentary functioning, engage in legislative debates, and perhaps most importantly, offer clear and consistent positions on policy matters.
